Melanie of Mala The Brand is inspired by European design and scents, combined with the nature of her hometown in Vancouver, B.C. Her focus for her candles stems from her passion for sustainability, and her love for all things marketing, design, and entrepreneurship.
What was your reason for signing up for a TreeEra membership? How do trees fit into Mala’s mission?
Growing up, I’ve always been naturally environmentally conscious and as i learned more about climate change from various documentaries and films, I knew that i wanted to create an impact with my small business. During the initial stages of planning my business before i officially launched, it was critical for me to put the earth first in all aspects of it from the materials I use, to the suppliers i source, and to the ethics of how i want to run a business.
When I conceptualized this business it was very important for me to create a way to give back to Mother Earth, and the way I see myself able to do that is through Tree Era’s business model, which has opened a passageway for me to create a regenerative cycle.
Tell us a little bit about Mala The Brand and how you got started
Mala is a hand-poured soy candle company based in Vancouver, BC, run solely by me. I focus on creating uniquely scented candles that are eco-friendly and sustainable, without sacrificing quality or aesthetics!
I like to call my brand a heart-centered business that operates with the earth in mind. I saw a gap in the candle market for candles made with toxin-free ingredients that also have a minimalist, chic aesthetic and that are priced affordably.
Mala got its start after my year of living in Germany and having travelled extensively all over Europe. I easily fell in love with the minimalist, romantic lifestyle of the Europeans. Mala is inspired by European design and scents, combined with the nature that my hometown of Vancouver, BC is known for. Mala the Brand blends all my favourite things into one: candles, my passion for sustainability, and of course my love for all things marketing, design, and entrepreneurship.
All of our materials used from the candle-making to the packaging are eco-friendly. We thoughtfully source our materials so that everything is made from post-consumer waste, fully recyclable or biodegradable, and contains no plastic
How does climate change impact your day-today?
Climate change has environmental, social, political, and economic repercussions. Businesses today are facing challenges for appropriate solutions to the environmental changes, like how they can adapt to the change and minimize the impact of it. Our consumer culture today is such a problem as we live on a planet with finite resources. There will be a time when our earth can no longer provide us with the resources necessary to fill our wants and desires. I feel it is imperative that our generation and leaders of today lead the way in advocating for the environment and setting an example for those that follow. I think that our government and big institutional leaders are finally noticing and paying attention as powerful figures such as 16 year old Greta Thunberg storm their way to demand change.
I love Tree Era’s concept of a subscription-based model for reforestation as it helps encourage businesses to develop more responsibility when it comes to how they lead their business models and encourages a more environmentally conscious economic model. By practicing sustainable consumption, or at least low-waste consumption, we can ensure that the environment has resources that are available long into the future.
Do you have a couple organizations, big or small, that inspire you?
I have always admired and fangirled over the beautiful brand Girlfriend Collective. They make synthetic activewear from 100% post-consumer water bottles that have their labels removed, are crushed into billions of minuscule chips, and then washed until they’re sparkling clean! How innovative is that?! I also love how they are fully transparent about how and where they manufacture their products and give behind the scenes on that.
I recently also discovered Samara, a company that creates luxury vegan purses and wallets made out of apples!! They do this by working with a small factory in Europe that creates apple leather out of apple skins that are a byproduct of the juicing industry. They also give back to Soular Backpack, which employs women in Kenya to create sustainable change. Check and check!
Where would your dream vacation be?
Exploring the wild landscape of Iceland in a camper van. I had the opportunity to travel there for just 4 days and i fell in love with the picturesque rolling hills, not to mention all the adorable wild ponies romping around!!!
