When is National Forest Week 2021?

National Forest Week will run from Sunday, September 19 to Saturday, September 25, 2021.

What is the purpose of National Forest Week?

“National Forest Week 2021 highlights how Canada’s diverse forests are connected to our everyday lives.”

Forests are more important now than ever. They are integral to our ecosystem and to the cultures of the people who live in and around them. Forests not only offer a variety of health benefits but also provide critical ecological functions. This is why the forest sector is considered an essential service!

National Forest Week is all about protecting Canada’s forests, learning more about forest heritage, and focusing on the crucial steps we can take to reduce our individual carbon footprints.

History of National Forest Week:

National Forest Week was established in 1920 and was originally named Forest Fire Prevention Week. The intention for the week was to raise public awareness about Canada’s forests. At this time, there was not an obvious shortage of trees, people weren’t fully aware of what climate change meant, and the greatest threat to forests came from human-caused fires. The week was renamed National Forest Week in 1967 and has evolved to encompass the many human and environmental aspects of Canada’s forest resources – past, present, and future.
