Canary Goods

A little birdy (we suspect it was a canary) told us about a gem of a shop in Calgary that only sold products that could be refilled, reused, or recycled back into nature at the end of its life named Canary Goods. We sat down with Founders Lisa Watts and Tara Meyer to learn more about their mission to reduce waste with simple, package-free options that are good for you and good for the planet.

What was your reason for working with TreeEra to plant trees? How do trees fit into Canary Good’s mission?

We love trees! Both of us have always had a strong relationship with nature, spending lots of time in the woods camping and hiking. We have a deep respect for the role trees play in our ecosystem, not only as the lungs of our planet, but the homes they provide, the water they filter, and the beauty and sanctuary they provide to our lives! We wanted to partner with Tree Era because ultimately both of our missions align in creating a more sustainable, healthy world.

Tell us a little bit about Canary Goods and how the company got started.

Canary is a bulk refillery shop that helps people reduce their waste and explore more sustainable options for everyday products. People can reduce the amount of plastic they use by refilling their containers for all kinds of products for home and personal care. We refill everything from laundry soap and cleaning products to specialty skin care and deodorant. We also offer a number of sustainable options when it comes time to replace things like plastic dish brushes or brooms that are sourced for their ability to break down back into nature at the end of their life cycle. We started Canary because we saw an opportunity to create a place that, we as consumers, would want to shop and have a positive social and environmental impact while we were doing it!

Why is joining the fight against climate change important to Canary Goods?

We know that unless we all work together to change the current path, we’re in big trouble. We’ve been inspired by the idea that when lots of people make even small changes, together they have a big impact on the planet as well as the decisions that corporations or governments make – we have a lot of power as consumers to change things for the better!

Are there any other organizations, big or small, that you feel are also doing a great job of making the environment a priority?

There are so many non-profit organizations in Canada that are doing amazing work – we love the Nature Conservancy of Canada and how companies like MEC grant money back into the community to further a love of nature and adventure. The bulk of the companies we carry in the shop are Canadian, and great examples of how small companies can prioritize the environment and deliver awesome products. There are so many great ones but some of our favourites are Routine Cream Deodorant, Oneka, Abeego, Om Organics and Plenty + Spare!
