Tip #1: Be picky about your plant choices. Choosing the right plants contributes to a large portion of your success when it comes to gardening in small spaces. Plants that have a high-yield and take minimal space such as herbs are excellent choices for sunny window spaces. When choosing your plants decide what kind of plants you are looking for ( e.g. vegetable, fruit, herbs, flowers) and research space and light requirements online before digging. Check out this list of 21 indoor plants for small spaces to get started.

Tip #2: Build up instead of out. The same rules apply to small space gardening as thoughtful urban planning, build it up instead of out. Utilizing vertical space opens up a whole new world of gardening possibilities. Ideas to get you started could be a living-wall, hanging baskets, or a gorgeous room divider (pictured left). Tip #3: Think outside the box (literally) for planting locations. Having multiple planting locations throughout your space can be a great way to increase your plant to space ratio. For plants that enjoy a more humid environment (think tropical) your bathroom can make a fantastic location. Other unorthodox places to plant include tops of shelves, old chairs, up-cycled drawers, whatever you can get your hands on really! For some beautiful bathroom-garden inspiration click here.

Tip #4: Utilize new technologies. Let’s face it, without sun plants just don’t work. Plants use sunshine to grow through the process of photosynthesis, which makes lots of shady corners in your small space uninhabitable. Luckily that is no longer the case with amazing new products that provide the right light, nutrients, and water quantity like the AVA Byte. These neat little home gardens promise a seamless user-friendly experience that produces fresh produce all year round.

Tip #5: Maximize your outdoor spaces. Many of us live smack dab in the middle of concrete jungles but that doesn’t mean that homegrown fresh produce is out of reach. By utilizing your outdoor balcony/patio you can grow a substantial amount of fresh vegetables and herbs. One way to do this is through raised beds and container gardening. A great option to maximize sunlight exposure is to incorporate wheels to follow the sun as needed. For more information on how to utilize raised beds click here.
