Did you know that the UK cities of Brighton, Hove, Dorset, and Cornwall have all made similar policies stating that new buildings more than five meters tall must include some form of shelter for endangered insects, such as bees?

That’s where the Bee Brick comes in…

England-based company, Green&Blue has produced a brick made out of 75% locally-sourced waste material that can be used as a habitat for bees. Itโ€™s hard to bee-lieve but itโ€™s true! The Bee Brick can be built into a wall as a replacement for a regular brick, or can simply stand alone in a garden.

“We believe passionately that every new house built needs to provide a home for wildlife as well as for us. With so many species in decline we have to rethink the way we plan, build and manage both housing and within our own gardens.”

“But why would I want bees near my home?!”

The Bee Brick and Green&Blue’s other amazing bee products are nesting sites for non-swarming solitary bees.

Benefits of Bees:

  1. Bees are responsible for pollinating nearly 85% of all food crops for humans, as well as numerous crops that grow the food fed to cattle. Due to the bee’s attention, crops thrive and produce fruit, vegetables, flowers, nuts, seeds, beans, and much more. Without bees, our options for food. would be seriously low.
  2. Bees play an important role in the life cycle of most plants and flowers. Without bees, many plant species would have no way to reproduce and instead become extinct.
  3. Honey! Did you know that bees are the only insect that produces a food consumed by humans?
  4. Bees create beeswax. Humans have found so many uses for beeswax that it is a hot commodity in the world of trade and commerce.

What are solitary bees?

Solitary bees are fascinating to watch and a wonderful way to introduce kids to bees. Solitary bees have no queen or honey to protect, meaning they are non-aggressive and wonโ€™t sting!
